Competition
Dining Fly Race
This competition will be explained at our next meeting. But, if you want to get a head start, here’s everything you need to know:
First, you’re going to need to know some knots and lashings. The two half hitches and taut-line hitch are Tenderfoot requirements, so look to Scouts in your patrol who are that rank or higher to help with those. The bowline is a Second Class requirement and the clove hitch is a First Class requirement. Yes, Firestarters, you are at a disadvantage because your patrol is younger and hasn’t progressed in rank yet. We will also be teaching you each of these knots immediately before the competition.
All the materials will be provided. This is a race, but it might be smart to take a few minutes to plan. You can even do that before the meeting if you’re ambitious.
You’ll be tying a total of 26 knots and lashings, and working together as a team to construct and erect the shelter. The video above walks you through the steps and—just as important—shows you what the finished structure should look like.
Good luck!
